FAQs

Q: What is liquid nitrogen?

A: Liquid nitrogen is nitrogen gas that has been condensed to liquid form and kept at an extremely low temperature.

Q: How cold is liquid nitrogen?

A: Nitrogen in liquid form is between -346° F and -320.44° F or -210° C and -195.8° C

Q: What is the environmental impact of using liquid nitrogen?

A: Liquid nitrogen is inert, colorless, odorless, noncorrosive, nonflammable, and extremely cold. As it evaporates it will return to the air as nitrogen gas which makes up approximately 78% of our atmosphere. Because we use liquid nitrogen instead of traditional ice cream freezers we actually have the lowest carbon foot print of any ice cream store.

Q: Is it safe to eat ice cream made with liquid nitrogen?

A: Yes, even though liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the ice cream it has completely evaporated before being served. Because liquid nitrogen is inert, colorless and odorless there are no lasting effects on the food after the liquid nitrogen has evaporated.

Q: Do you offer dragons breath or similar products at Nitro Live Icecreamery?

A: No, due to safety concerns we will not ever offer dragons breath at a Nitro Live Icecreamery. As described in the FDA’s warning, dragons breath is served while still containing nitrogen in its liquid form so that you are able to see the visual effect of the cloud created when liquid nitrogen evaporates. Besides the potential frostbite and burns that are commonly associated with touching liquid nitrogen if swallowed liquid nitrogen can cause severe internal damage and potentially burst your stomach as it evaporates and expands. Here at Nitro Live Icecreamery we believe that no customer should be exposed to those dangers.

Q: Is it safe for the employees to use the liquid nitrogen?

A: Yes, at Nitro Live Icecreamery our employees do not purposefully touch the liquid nitrogen for any reason. While freezing ice cream there is a chance that the liquid will splash on them but it is in small amounts that evaporate quickly due to the Leidenfrost Effect.

Q: I have a food allergy to (state your food allergy). Is that something your establishment is comfortable handling?

A: The Nitro Live Icecreamery is very comfortable with accommodating dietary restrictions, and we offer a list of all the nutritional and ingredient information for each of our menu items.

Q: What is your process for managing food allergies and preventing cross contamination?

A: Because each ice cream is custom made to your order at The Nitro Live Icecreamery, each order has its own stainless-steel bowl and our Nitrologists will use a fresh scoop and spade to avoid contact with other food items other than what you have ordered.
